B. became a member of my extended family 28 years ago. Through those years we have shared many meals, birthday cakes, funeral services, Christmas mornings, and weekly church services. He is a true southern gentleman; gracious and kind, with a quick wit and delightful sense of humor. At one such family get together last night, he said to me “Stay Sweet….and Be Particular”. He went on to explain that his sister-in-law used to say that, many years ago when his own children were young. As I was leaving I couldn’t stop thinking about what that meant, then and now.
To be particular means to make careful, thoughtful, and purposeful selections about who and what we surround ourselves with. It means we actively choose what we fill our minds and our life with. Good advice. We have the world at our fingertips today and it comes at us in a steady barrage. We have to be more vigilantly particular today than ever before. It is up to us to pick and choose what supports our dreams and our true self. And it is up to us, to say No Thanks to what does not. The choices come in big and small moments, but still they come. When they do, this advice from years ago still rings true, Be Sweet ….and Be Particular.
